Introduction

Venturing into the thriving asparagus farming sector in How Caple, we were presented with the challenge of efficiently irrigating two vast fields: Field 1, measuring 2.40Ha and Field 2 spanning an expansive 12.00Ha. Our objective? To deliver a robust, efficient, and sustainable irrigation system tailored for optimal asparagus growth.

Starting with the system’s heart, we chose a high-pressure diesel pump unit, built for both endurance and efficiency. Notably, this powerhouse runs on an Iveco N67 6 Cylinder 178hp engine, seamlessly working with the Caprari MG 100-2-a HT Pump. We also added an auto throttle control to ensure optimal fuel consumption, and with a 950L fuel tank, the system runs longer without interruptions. For both safety and easy access, we designed the unit with lockable doors, which also offer acoustic coverage.

What we did

Next, we laid out an impressive 139,500m of pressure-compensating drip irrigation pipe. Specifically, this dripline, which is essential, offers precision with its 20mm Dripnet PC, releasing 0.6LPH at 30cm intervals. This design ensures every asparagus plant gets just the right hydration.

Then, to move water effectively through the large fields, we established an underground pipework system. This setup incorporated valve stations, header pipework, and necessary transitions linking to the driplines above ground.

Conclusion

Lastly, our advanced control system sets us apart. We integrated electronically controlled solenoid valves and paired them with Rain Bird Bluetooth controllers. With this setup, we can make real-time adjustments, allowing each asparagus plant to flourish. Additionally, the disk filter we selected is key for water purity, making sure the drip system remains clear of blockages.

First off, our team began with purpose. Armed with specialised machinery and rich expertise, we set to work on the How Caple asparagus fields. Now, this farm boasts an integrated mix of driplines. Coupled with an efficient pump, advanced solenoid valves, and a steadfast disk filter, these pieces work in harmony. As a result, the farm’s yield and quality have significantly improved.
